Classroom Rules:
Ø You are expected to have an attitude that is conducive to learning
Ø Respect yourself, others, and the property of others as well as the school property
Ø All procedures and instructions must be correctly followed
Ø All contents and activities in this classroom must be “G” rated.
Ø Accept the responsibilities for your own behavior
Ø You are responsible for your own learning
Ø You are responsible for obtaining your own make-up work when absent
Ø Follow the dress code for the school. Caps, visors, hoods, bandanas etc are not to be worn in class. Clothing with inappropriate material must be turned inside out or covered. Bra straps or boxers should not be visible at any time.
Ø Food and water (plastic bottles with a cap only) are acceptable in class as long as you clean up after yourself and it does not become an interference with the learning process. Gum is permitted as long as it does not become a distraction.
Ø You must stay in your seats until you are dismissed, even if the bell has already rung.
Ø Bring with you only those materials that are needed for class. Confiscated materials will not be returned until the end of the school year or until a parent contacts me. (This includes but is not limited to music players, video games and cell phones)
Student Rights:
Ø You have the right to expect a safe learning environment (verbally, emotionally, and physically). In order to ensure this, no bullying will be tolerated.
Ø You have the right to achieve to your highest learning potential. (to do your best)
Ø You have the right to a bad day; however you are expected to act in a respectful manner.
Ø You have the right to question the correcting of any assignment, quiz, test, etc.
Ø You have the right to be respected for your beliefs and opinions.
Ø You have the right to two make-up calendar days for work missed due to an excused absence; however, it is your responsibility to get the work for the days you miss. Work should be obtained from your teacher the first day you return to school after an absence, or online if you have access while absent. If possible, you should get the work ahead of time if you know you will be gone. (such as for school sponsored events)
Ø You have the right to enjoy your learning.
Teacher Rights:
Ø I have the right to discipline a student who disrupts the learning environment.
Ø I have the right to the final decision in all activities or situations that may or may not arise in the classroom.
Ø I reserve the right to correct late work at my discretion when allowed.
Ø I have the right to be human.
Ø I have the right to make changes to this survival guide at my discretion, but I will notify the students of changes made.
Parent Communication:
Ø Parent contact will be made when appropriate.
Ø Parents are free to call me from 7:45 AM to 8:15 AM or from 3:32 PM to 3:45 PM at the school or leave a message during school hours along with a time when I can call back. Email also works well and is probably the easiest way to contact me. (wendy.schamber@k12.sd.us)
Class Procedures:
Math Class:
Ø Review. There will be a short review at the beginning of each class period. This is the best time to ask questions on previous assignments, however, questions may be asked at any time, except during quizzes and tests. If there are no questions, it is assumed the students know the material and the class will move on. Please ask questions if you don’t understand. THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A STUPID QUESTION!
Ø Collect Homework. Homework will be collected at the teacher’s discretion. Not all homework collected will be graded, however all homework is expected to be completed. Quizzes will randomly be given for a grade. These will be quizzes that come from homework problems already assigned, or similar to those already assigned. Assignments need to be organized and clearly labeled in order to maintain materials in their proper organized locations.
Ø New Material. Material for each lesson will be covered through lecture, notes, demonstrations, and/or group/class activities.
Ø Assign Homework*. Homework will be assigned each day. Students will have class time to complete, or at least begin such assignments.
Ø Fridays will be dedicated to technical writing through the SD Counts program. A COMPOSITION NOTEBOOK is REQUIRED for this.
Ø If a student wishes to use the restroom or get a drink etc., this is the time to make such requests. In order to maintain a right to this class time, it must remain quiet so that others may work.
Algebra Class:
Ø Class will begin each day with questions from the homework set that should have been completed the night before, followed by a discussion of the quiz which should have been completed online after watching the video lecture from the current lesson. The remainder of the class period will be used for further exploration of the concept/standard and work time. This is the best time to ask questions on previous assignments, however, questions may be asked at any time, except during quizzes and tests. If there are no questions, it is assumed the students know the material and the class will move on. Please ask questions if you don’t understand. THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A STUPID QUESTION!
Ø Homework will not be collected on a regular basis, however it is expected that homework will be completed on a regular basis. No one who has opted to not do the homework has ever passed the state test. Grades for Algebra come from demonstrating proficiency on quizzes, tests, and in class practice.
Ø New Material. Material for each lesson will be covered through lecture, notes and demonstrations, and will be delivered online through the Edmodo venue. Students will need to have Internet access to complete the Algebra requirements.
Ø Assign Homework*. Homework for Algebra consists of watching videos, taking notes, completing a quiz on those notes and then beginning practice from the textbook. Students may have class time to at least begin such assignments.
Ø If a student wishes to use the restroom or get a drink etc., this is the time to make such requests. In order to maintain a right to this class time, it must remain quiet so that others may work.
All Math Classes:
Ø Logic Problems. Logic Problems will be done usually one time per week. All problems should be turned in with the student’s name, date, problem number, question, work done and answer on a clean piece of paper. All correct answers will be tabulated. After a student has correctly responded to 5 logic problems, s/he will be allowed a free daily assignment pass which may be used however the student chooses.
General Guidelines:
Ø Any student that is not in or immediately heading to his/her assigned seat when the bell rings is tardy. Students making requests to use the restroom prior to class should know they may be late and will be marked tardy. Students requesting to leave at the start of class will be asked to wait until at least 20 minutes of the class period has passed or until there is a “break in the action”. This is left to the teacher’s discretion.
Ø Two points will be possible every day for attendance, attitude, respect and organization. One point is lost for every tardy or excused absence and 2 points are lost for every unexcused absence. Points may also be lost for inappropriate behavior. This grade is recorded quarterly as “Class Points.”
Ø All supplies (i.e. textbook, notebook, agenda etc) are to be brought to class each day. Failure to bring supplies to class will result in a loss of one point per day.
Ø All students are expected to work on and or complete all assignments during the designated class time. Failure to work during the designated time will result in the loss of two points per day.
Ø All test and quiz make-up times if one is missed due to an absence must be scheduled with the teacher.
Ø All assignments (new and old) are to be kept until you are certain that your score has been recorded. Please check Campus regularly as errors do occur. Please bring any error to the attention of the teacher so that it may be fixed as soon as possible. Please remember that grades can not be changed once posted for the quarter.
Ø All work that is handed in should have the proper heading. First and last name, class, assignment and date are required.
Ø During the first semester of the year, late work will be accepted for 80% credit as long as it is turned in prior to the completion of the chapter or unit from which it was assigned. Late work accompanied by a late pass will be accepted for 100% of the credit earned provided it is done prior to the completion of the current unit. Redo work will be graded at 80% at the teacher’s convenience and at the teacher’s discretion – not all work may be redone. Work from prior units may NOT be redone. No late work will be accepted during the second semester of the year without a late pass.
Ø Please do not ask to get a drink, use the restroom etc. while Ms. Schamber is talking. Such requests are only appropriate during homework time. Failure to comply with this will result in a forfeit of the privilege to leave the room for any reason.
Ø If you finish your work before class is over, you are required to work on something quietly at your seat or read.
Ø All students need to ask permission to leave the room unless it is an emergency, and must be signed out on the designated traffic log (agenda) along with the time of departure, destination and arrival time when he/she returns. Students must also have a hall pass. Students leaving the room will be docked one point for each excursion over 4 minutes, or each time the student does not use a pass.
Ø Each student is to clean up his or her own work area and the surrounding area. The classroom should be left cleaner than when entered and all the desks should be returned to their proper location.
Classroom Safety:
Ø Students should know the fire escape route and the meeting location. In the event that the fire alarm goes off, every student MUST check in with the teacher at the designated location. Failure to do so will result in a loss of class points for that day.
Ø If a student is injured, a student should not attempt to help the injured student but should notify the teacher immediately.
